PRESENTER(British): Good
afternoon, everyone. My name is Officer Turner and I’m head of campus security
here at King’s College London. It’s important that you understand the role of
public safety on our campus, so I’m going to go over the basics of what we do
here since you’re new.
First of all, our
primary purpose is to ensure the safety of students. We have 12 officers on
campus at any point of the day or night. We also have three plain clothes
security officers that you won’t be able to recognise. Another service we offer
is 24 hour monitoring with closed circuit television cameras. Two officers in
the office monitor the cameras at all times. So, it’s safe to say
that the campus is being watched constantly for any suspicious or unlawful
behaviour. In addition to patrolling the campus during both weekdays and
weekends, we offer additional support for university functions and events.
Secondly, the campus
is also guarded with a state-of-the-art alarm system. Our
response time to any alarm or emergency on campus averages 20 to 30 seconds. That means, in
under a minute, we’ll have at least one officer on the scene of any emergency.
Now, I’ve been working here for
30 years, and we’ve yet to have any time of emergency
where a campus security officer was not able to respond immediately. Not bad,
right? Let me assure you, your safety is of primary concern to me and my staff.
Our office is
located right in the centre of campus. It’s building number 203 and there’s a
large sign outside. At the office, you can file reports regarding illegal
behaviour or pay fines for parking tickets. We also have a lost and found
service, so if you lose something valuable and it’s been turned in to campus
security, you can pick it up at the office between 8:00AM and 5:30PM, Monday through Friday.
Since you’re all
living on the campus, I want to let you know that we also enforce certain
restrictions at student housing. For example,
excessive noise after 9:00PM during the week or 11:00PM on weekends will be
handled with a warning first and then a fine if it continues. Fines are
£50. If fines aren’t paid on time, then
an additional £10 is added for each week that it’s late. Keep in mind that
students with unpaid fines are unable to receive their final grades. For your
convenience, we have a packet for new students that covers all campus rules and
regulations. I have some hard copies with me here, which you can take with you,
or you can download a PDF from our webpage.
Just a few other
things before I wrap up. The phone number to our office is 20 5689 5699. You
can also email us at campussecuritykcl@kclmail.edu.
We normally respond to emails within 3 – 5 days. If you’re in an emergency,
please call 114 from any campus phone and a dispatcher will assist you
immediately. You may also register your mobile number with our office. This will allow you to receive text message updates about
possible threats on campus, severe weather warnings, or updates about fire
alarm testing. The service is free of charge.
I
